No return for the effort at Gold Coast today as we see some slight misses the difference between a winning day and a small losing day as we pick up a couple of places and a handful of nothing.

Starting with R2 we were disappointed to see #5 Etana manage what we thought was well outside of the skill-set as both #9 Saxton Rock and #10 Tivoli Street both failed to put in the effort.

About the only thing we had right here was the value around the price as the late market skewed towards #6 Reckless Choice to push the price on #5 Etana out past the $4.00 mark on the exchanges.

R3 was a much better improvement as our half stake units managed 3rd and 4th at 1.95L and 2.05L respectively with #5 A Man to Match ($9.00/$9.72) and #12 Our Fun at a whopping $21.00/$26.65.

Whilst the run didn’t see us nab a collect this time around, the margin of 2.05L on #12 Our Fun was exceptional value with $21.00+ available everywhere and a solid $26.65 at BSP.

We would’ve expected a stronger performance out of #1 The Candy Man but happily this let us nab bigger prices as the market continues to pile on the favourite.

#8 Primitivo is the one that we identified as the danger with the late price of $8.50 still not quite where we needed for the rated price, but nonetheless an impressive finish as we get close to picking a big-price trifecta.

We finish off with R4 and a very average run from #1 Kemalpasa as the only positive thing we can report on is the price with $13.92 at BSP a huge improvement over the $!2.00 available at SP.

Unfortunately, the margin of 3.00L is a far cry from the sub 1.50L we were expecting – although we still managed significantly better than the 4.65L achieved by $6.50 3rd favourite #10 Scallopini as we pick up 4th.

Although the shorties got it this time around, we can see the effect of traffic on the late field with just 2.90L between 3rd and 10th — one of the biggest reasons behind our single unit play and lower outlay across the higher quality runners.

We made the tough decision to avoid the late races and this was the correct play with shorties, tight margins and massive fields causing issues across the afternoon as the risk to reward ratio all but dried up.

Whilst we’re largely not disappointed with the picks today, we would’ve liked to see better efforts out of #10 Tivoli Street and #9 Saxton Rock who are both capable of far more.

At the same time, we were close to finding that value proposition in #12 Our Fun with the massive price able to significantly outperform market expectations and one which we think we’ll manage a collect on another time in the future as we look for another strategic play to lock in the value.

As we mentioned earlier – the three tracks have certainly been very strange today so with a bit of luck we’ll be back to seeing normal fields and volumes as we come into the 3rd week of January 2020.
