No return for the effort today at Morphettville as our pair of bets fail to hit home.

Although we occasionally like to visit this track, it’s not often that we pick up positions here, with the small sample size meaning we’re not really able to objectively draw conclusions.

Looking at the results from Bendigo, however, it was definitely the right move to stay out of the huge fields which saw horses being placed in almost seemingly random fashion with no rhyme or reason between the markets and the performance.

Starting off late in R6 we fail to see any effort out of #1 Master Chum with an ridiculous margin a very disappointing run as crowd favourite #3 Grand Crown managing a strong 2.50L margin.

The only upside for us here is that we managed to have the plunge go our way, with our late price an SP of $5.50 whilst over on Betfair we nabbed a better margin at $6.58 – of course a bit of a moot point given the finish but definitely a nice overlay against the theoretical rated price of just $3.14.

Unfortunately, everything from the jump left a bad taste in the mouth with a very weird run from the gate seeing us drop to dead last for a moment and completely out of contention as the pack turned into a column leaving us no breathing room to escape.

With #3 Grand Crown and #2 Pickelhaube in strong leader positions, the expected trifecta essentially came with the substitution of #6 Serious Spender with #4 Flow Meter also well positioned.

Perhaps making up for some of the lackluster running, #1 Master Chum took a stab at passing around the 1000m mark, with it becoming obvious by 750m that there’s simply too much margin to make up.

The effort really doubled down at the 600m, but with the sharp turn and a far move to the outside of the pack it was here that any late upset was really too little and too late with #3 Grand Crown showing no signs of turning down the massive margin.

Out of all of today’s picks, this is the one we’re most salty about as there’s absolutely no reason that such a great horse shouldn’t be putting in a strong effort in a field such as this one, with plenty of opportunities to get near the place given to any runner capable of putting in a smart move.

Unlike some of the results over at Rosehill, we don’t see that traffic and pressure from other runners was at fault, so this will be one that we critically pull apart over the next few days to figure out exactly how it stacked up so poorly against previously very strong form.

#7 Tintagel Rocker was our small outlay mega-roughie for the day jumping in R8 at a whopping $70.00 on the exchanges and a far shorter $41.00 at SP, as we managed to dive down in-play to mid $20s not quite where we needed to be against the rated price of $14.47.

We certainly threw more weight around than the price suggested, with a strong jump leading to a healthy 4th with the pack closing in at the turn leaving us with just a tiny hole to rip through.

Unfortunately we simply didn’t get the opportunity here, with #3 Li’l Kontra and #2 Equal Love excelling at the sprint, with #2 Equal Love’s position in front of us at the turn the real trouble for an attempt to get through.

With the strong early pace, we really needed to get out a bit further ahead to have a go at it, and although we did state it to be a long shot (and brought the outlay in completely to compensate) it was still a decent effort at a very solid overlay.
